OpenAI opens self-serve ad platform to all ChatGPT advertisers

OpenAI launched 'Advertise in ChatGPT,' a self-serve ads manager targeting users by conversational context, with Best Buy, Lowe's and VistaPrint among early buyers.

OpenAI on July 22 opened "Advertise in ChatGPT," a self-serve advertising platform at ads.openai.com that lets any advertiser create campaigns, set budgets and place sponsored messages inside the world's most-used AI chatbot. The move turns what had been a limited experiment into a general-availability ad business.

From cautious test to open marketplace

OpenAI began testing sponsored placements in ChatGPT in February 2026 and quietly released an invite-gated self-serve tool in early May. The July 22 launch removes the gate: brands can now sign up directly, and early adopters include Best Buy, Lowe's and VistaPrint. Unlike search advertising, targeting is built around conversational context — the system matches ads to what a user is discussing rather than to typed keywords, a format OpenAI argues is more relevant and advertisers hope is more persuasive.

The launch lands as OpenAI shoulders enormous infrastructure commitments and continues to burn billions of dollars a year. Free-tier monetization has become a strategic necessity: subscriptions alone cannot cover the compute bill for hundreds of millions of weekly users who pay nothing.

An uncomfortable reversal

The rollout has revived a widely quoted 2024 remark from CEO Sam Altman, who once called the combination of ads and AI "uniquely unsettling" and described advertising as "a last resort" for the company's business model. Critics note that an assistant that knows a user's private conversations is a fundamentally different advertising surface from a search box, raising sharper questions about data use, disclosure and the boundary between organic answers and paid ones.

Why it matters

Advertising inside ChatGPT is arguably the biggest business-model shift in consumer AI since the launch of paid subscriptions. If conversational targeting works at scale, it creates a revenue engine that could rival search economics — and pressures Google, Meta and every assistant maker to follow. It also sets the precedent for how the industry will monetize free AI users, making the integrity of AI answers a live commercial question rather than a hypothetical one.
