OpenAI Images 2.6 adds GIFs and faster image creation

OpenAI’s latest image release adds animated GIF output, reusable references and faster generation across ChatGPT, Codex and its API.

What changed

OpenAI has released Images 2.6 across ChatGPT, Codex and the API. The update adds animated GIF generation, reusable reference images and more precise editing controls. Users can keep images of people, products, pets or fictional characters available for later creations instead of uploading them repeatedly.

OpenAI says the new system generates images 50% faster than its predecessor. Developers receive two API models: GPT-Image-2.6 Flare, optimized for speed and capable of producing some low-quality outputs in roughly six seconds, and GPT-Image-2.6 Sunburst, designed for higher visual quality and stronger consistency across edits.

The API also gains markup-guided editing, SVG export and separate controls for image quality and scene complexity. That separation matters because it lets an application trade planning time against visual fidelity rather than relying on a single hidden model setting. GIF creation is aimed at lightweight animation, product demonstrations, character tests and social content rather than full video production.

Why it matters

OpenAI says users now create about four billion images per week across ChatGPT, Codex and the API. At that scale, a seemingly small workflow improvement can affect a large creator and software ecosystem. Reusable references address one of the persistent weaknesses of generative media: maintaining identity and design continuity over repeated sessions.

The release also pushes image generation further into production workflows. SVG output, targeted edits and API access make the model more useful for design systems and applications, while GIFs give users a low-cost bridge between still-image generation and video. The unresolved question is whether its consistency controls will hold up under demanding commercial workloads, where a single incorrect logo, face or product detail can erase the speed advantage.
