Meta acquires Conductor to coordinate coding agents

Meta is acquiring Conductor, whose software lets developers run multiple coding agents in parallel, adding orchestration to its developer strategy.

What happened

Meta has acquired Conductor, a startup whose software lets engineers deploy multiple coding agents into separate workspaces and run them in parallel. Meta confirmed the deal but did not disclose financial terms or provide a detailed product roadmap.

Conductor’s founder Charlie Holtz said the company is joining Meta and hinted that a new product will be available early next year. The existing service will not continue unchanged: Conductor Cloud will become read-only on November 13 and shut down on November 20. Users are being asked to export their cloud data before deletion begins. The local product will continue receiving new models and critical fixes for a limited period.

Unlike model labs, Conductor does not develop the agents it orchestrates. Its platform can work with agents from companies including Anthropic and OpenAI, allowing developers to split a software project into parallel tasks and review the resulting work.

Why Meta wants it

Meta has been building its own developer and enterprise AI stack, including Muse Code and other Muse agents. Acquiring Conductor gives Meta experience in a workflow where several agents operate simultaneously rather than a single assistant responding to one request at a time.

That distinction is strategically important. As coding agents become more capable, the bottleneck may shift from producing code to assigning tasks, isolating workspaces, merging results and keeping the process understandable to human engineers. Conductor’s product is built around that coordination problem.

The acquisition also highlights the pressure on independent developer tools. Conductor’s cloud shutdown means customers lose a service that is being folded into a larger platform before Meta has explained the replacement. The deal’s value therefore depends on whether Meta turns Conductor’s multi-agent workflow into a broadly useful product, rather than treating the startup primarily as a talent and interface acquisition.
