Tencent Puts 33-Language Translation on Devices Offline
Tencent’s new Hy Translation app brings Hy-MT2 to phones with offline text, voice and image translation across 33 languages and Chinese dialects.
Tencent has launched Hy Translation, a mobile app built around its Hy-MT2 translation models and designed to work fully offline. Tencent says the application supports translation among 33 languages, as well as five Chinese minority languages and dialects, and can handle text, voice and images on the device.
The app is powered by Hy-MT2, a model family Tencent open-sourced in May in 1.8B, 7B and 30B-A3B mixture-of-experts variants. The release therefore represents more than a new consumer interface: it is an attempt to turn an open model stack into a practical, cross-border utility that does not require a persistent cloud connection.
Offline operation is particularly relevant for travel, field work, privacy-sensitive communication and regions with unreliable connectivity. It also changes the economics of deployment. Translation can happen without sending recordings or images to a remote service, while latency and availability become less dependent on network conditions. The trade-off is that on-device models must balance quality, memory footprint, battery use and support for less-resourced languages.
The Asian-timezone timing makes this one of the edition’s clearest regional stories. Tencent is using a model released earlier in the year to demonstrate a concrete product path: multilingual capability becomes more valuable when it is packaged for local execution rather than left as an API or research release. The open question is how well Hy Translation performs on dialects, noisy speech and domain-specific language outside Tencent’s demonstrations.
