Suno to watermark and fingerprint AI-generated songs

The music generator will embed tamper-resistant audio watermarks, add fingerprinting, restrict bulk downloads and license Musixmatch's Sentinel for lyric copyright detection.

Suno said on Thursday it will begin marking the songs its models generate, publishing a plan that combines audio watermarking, fingerprinting, tighter download rules and a licensing deal for lyric copyright detection.

The measures

Chief executive Mikey Shulman said in a company post that the marks are meant to be durable and resistant to tampering while leaving the listening experience untouched. Suno has not said which scheme it will use — whether Google's SynthID or an alternative — nor when enforcement begins. Alongside watermarking, the company will fingerprint generated audio so tracks can be recognised after the fact, and change its download policies to make mass distribution onto streaming services harder. Updated community guidelines explicitly bar deceptive audio and the use of a person's voice without permission. Separately, Suno has signed an agreement with lyrics provider Musixmatch to incorporate its Sentinel copyright-detection system.

The context

The announcement lands in the middle of Suno's worst legal stretch. The company faces suits from major record labels and artist organisations, recently lost a copyright case brought by German collecting society GEMA, and is contending with a class action over a data breach affecting tens of millions of users. It raised $400 million in a Series D in June. Streaming platforms, meanwhile, have spent the past year deleting AI-generated uploads at scale and pressing generators to make their output identifiable at the source.

Why it matters

Provenance marking has been the industry's stated answer to AI slop for two years, but it only works if the generators themselves apply it — detection bolted on downstream has consistently failed. Suno is the largest music generator to commit publicly, which makes its implementation the de facto test of whether audio watermarking survives contact with re-encoding, stem separation and deliberate stripping. It is also a negotiating posture: labels and platforms have made identifiability a precondition for licensing talks, and a generator that can prove which tracks are its own has something to trade. Whether that converts into settlements, or merely into cleaner evidence for the plaintiffs, is the open question.
