OpenAI and Synopsys Build Model for Chip Design Workflows

OpenAI and Synopsys will develop GPT-Synopsys, an agentic system intended to operate EDA tools and optimize semiconductor designs.

A model trained around engineering tools

OpenAI and electronic-design-automation company Synopsys have announced a multiyear partnership to develop GPT-Synopsys, a specialized model for semiconductor design. The system is intended to use Synopsys’ EDA tools, interpret their outputs, and iterate on designs under engineering-defined objectives.

The proposed workflow goes beyond a conversational assistant. Engineers could delegate goals such as power, performance, and area optimization, timing closure, or verification. Agents would run design tools, inspect the results, make changes, and repeat the process before engineers review the outcome.

The partnership combines OpenAI’s frontier models with Synopsys’ proprietary tools and engineering data. The companies plan a bundled service covering compute, model access, and software licenses, with a shared-revenue commercial model. They say GPT-Synopsys will run on OpenAI-hosted infrastructure and include encryption, configurable retention, access controls, and audit features. Customer data is not intended for model training.

The project is not yet a generally available product. The announcement says early technology engagements with semiconductor customers are under way, leaving performance, deployment timing, and pricing to be demonstrated.

Why it matters

Chip design is one of the most consequential domains for AI itself, and it remains constrained by expensive tools, scarce expertise, and long validation cycles. If an agent can reliably manage parts of the EDA loop, it could let engineering teams explore more alternatives without increasing headcount at the same rate.

The deeper shift is that the model is being built around a trusted engineering environment rather than asked to produce standalone design text. That may improve usefulness, but it also makes the system dependent on proprietary tool access and rigorous verification. GPT-Synopsys could become an important bridge between frontier models and industrial automation, yet its value will be measured by first-pass silicon and verified PPA gains, not by the partnership announcement alone.
