Nvidia Agrees to Acquire Hugging Face for $12.9B
The chipmaker is buying the leading open-model hub while promising continued support for rival hardware, clouds and models.
The deal
Nvidia has agreed to acquire Hugging Face for $12.93 billion, bringing the largest distribution platform for open AI models under the world’s dominant supplier of AI accelerators. Nvidia said Hugging Face will retain its name and remain open to models, frameworks, cloud providers and computing platforms outside Nvidia’s ecosystem. The companies did not disclose a closing timetable or detailed integration plan.
Hugging Face says its platform serves more than 18 million developers, researchers and creators, hosts over three million models, 500,000 datasets and one million applications, and is used by more than 200,000 companies. That makes the acquisition substantially different from a conventional model-lab purchase: Nvidia is gaining the discovery, evaluation and deployment layer through which much of the open-model economy reaches users.
Strategic tension
The transaction gives Nvidia another route to influence AI software choices as large closed-model laboratories increasingly develop their own chips or negotiate alternatives to Nvidia hardware. Hugging Face supplies valuable signals about which architectures, inference engines and accelerators developers adopt. It can also connect model downloads to Nvidia’s hosting, optimization and enterprise tooling.
That position creates an immediate governance question. Hugging Face currently functions as neutral infrastructure for models optimized for AMD accelerators, Google TPUs, Apple silicon and other competing systems. Nvidia has explicitly promised that its hardware will not be required and that multi-cloud and multi-accelerator support will continue. Developers will nevertheless judge the acquisition through future defaults, rankings, documentation and deployment paths—not the announcement alone.
Why it matters
Hugging Face is one of the few common distribution layers spanning research, startups and major technology companies. Ownership by Nvidia could fund better security, evaluation and hosting, but it also concentrates chips, developer tools and open-model distribution in one company. The durability of Hugging Face’s neutrality will now affect competition across the entire AI stack.
