Mistral Raises €3 Billion to Expand Sovereign AI
Mistral’s record European funding round gives its open-weight strategy unprecedented capital, while tying Samsung and Europe more closely to frontier AI.
Mistral AI has raised €3 billion in a Series D round led by Samsung Electronics, valuing the French company at more than €21 billion. EQT’s Scaleup Europe Fund and existing investor PSG Equity co-led the financing, with additional participation from industrial, financial and technology investors.
Capital for a sovereign model strategy
Mistral says the money will support frontier-model research, expanded computing capacity, infrastructure, products and international growth. The company now operates in 20 countries and says it serves more than 125 large enterprises, including Airbus, ASML and HSBC.
The round is notable not only for its size but for the identity of its lead investor. Samsung brings manufacturing scale, semiconductor expertise and a major Asian industrial footprint to a company whose pitch has centered on open-weight models and European control over AI infrastructure. ASML, Nvidia, Salesforce Ventures and other strategic investors also remain involved.
Mistral’s valuation has risen sharply from its previous financing, but the company still faces a difficult commercial gap. American rivals have raised substantially larger sums and can spend more aggressively on training, distribution and cloud capacity. Open weights can widen adoption, yet they also make it harder to capture the full economic value of a model through exclusive access.
Why it matters
This is the strongest financial signal yet that sovereign and open-weight AI is becoming an industrial policy project rather than a narrow software bet. Samsung’s leadership gives Mistral additional credibility in Asia and hardware markets, but the new capital will matter only if it produces models and products that customers choose over better-funded alternatives.
Uncle Cat take
Samsung’s lead is more consequential than the headline valuation: Mistral is becoming an industrial alliance, not merely Europe’s well-funded model lab.
