Google Opens Home Devices to Third-Party AI Agents
Google is exposing Google Home controls through an agent interface, allowing outside AI systems to operate compatible smart-home devices.
Google is opening Google Home devices to third-party AI agents through a new interface based on the Model Context Protocol. Compatible agents will be able to discover and control supported household devices, extending beyond Google’s own assistant experience.
The change gives outside systems access to actions such as controlling lights, thermostats, locks, and other connected equipment, subject to device support and user permissions. Google’s approach treats the home as an environment that agents can act inside, rather than a collection of isolated voice commands. Developers can therefore build agents that combine home controls with other tools and services.
The move is strategically important because smart-home platforms have traditionally been closed ecosystems. By exposing device capabilities to an agent standard, Google can make Google Home more useful even when the reasoning or conversational layer comes from another provider. It also creates a new distribution surface for agents: a system that can plan across calendars, messages, shopping, and physical devices is more valuable than one limited to text.
The risk profile is correspondingly higher. A bad answer is reversible; an incorrect command to a lock, heater, or appliance may not be. Permission design, confirmation requirements, audit logs, and protection against prompt injection will determine whether the integration is practical outside demonstrations. Google’s announcement matters because it moves agent interoperability from software data into the physical home, where the cost of an ambiguous instruction is measurable in security, privacy, and safety.
