Google Tests Direct Flipkart Purchases Inside Gemini in India
Google is testing a Buy button for selected Flipkart products inside Gemini and AI Mode, pushing its Indian search experience toward agentic commerce.
What happened
Google is testing a shopping flow in India that lets selected users buy certain Flipkart products from within Gemini and Google’s AI Mode. A Buy button appears on eligible listings, including smartphones, electronics and mobile accessories, and opens a Flipkart-branded checkout without requiring users to leave the AI interface.
The test is limited in both audience and inventory. Google is expected to broaden access in October, ahead of India’s major festive shopping season. The company has confirmed that it is experimenting with new shopping features but has not disclosed the technical architecture or whether this specific flow uses its Universal Commerce Protocol.
Why India matters
The experiment extends Gemini beyond product discovery, comparison and recommendation into the transaction itself. That is strategically important because the most valuable part of online commerce is often the moment when a user commits to a purchase, rather than the earlier search process. Keeping that moment inside an AI interface gives Google more control over product context, ranking and the user relationship.
Flipkart is a particularly significant launch partner. It is Walmart-owned, deeply established in India and already has the inventory, payments and fulfillment systems required for a real commerce test. Google also invested about $350 million in Flipkart in 2024, giving the partnership a closer commercial connection than a standard retailer integration.
The current implementation still stops short of a fully autonomous shopping agent: the user selects the item and is sent into Flipkart’s checkout flow. Even so, it tests whether conversational search can become a reliable commercial entry point in one of the world’s fastest-growing digital markets. If the October expansion works, India could become an important proving ground for Google’s broader agentic-commerce strategy.
Uncle Cat take
The important change is not the Buy button itself; it is Google testing checkout control with Flipkart before attempting a broader merchant network.
