Cursor launches ₹649 India tier with cloud agents
Cursor's first localised plan bundles Composer 2.5, Grok 4.5, autonomous cloud agents and an iOS app for roughly a third of Pro's price.
Localised pricing, agentic feature set
Cursor introduced Cursor Start on Tuesday, a ₹649-per-month plan sold only to developers in India. That is roughly $7 at current rates, against $20 for the global Pro tier, and it is billed in rupees with UPI or card payment — a long-standing request from Indian users who previously had to pay in dollars.
The plan is not a stripped-down trial. It includes what Cursor calls generous access to its two price-efficient models, its in-house Composer 2.5 and xAI's Grok 4.5, across web, desktop, CLI and the iOS app. It also carries autonomous cloud agents that build, test and open pull requests while the user is elsewhere, the ability to launch and steer those agents from a phone and resume the work on desktop, and full support for plugins, MCP servers, hooks and skills. What Start excludes is frontier models from OpenAI and Anthropic, plus higher-tier features such as Bugbot and Auto Mode.
Cursor says its Indian user base has roughly tripled over the past year to more than three million developers, making India its third-largest market and, by the company's account, the country with its highest concentration of power users. Simon Green, who leads Asia-Pacific for Cursor, framed the move as right-sizing the commercial model to drive scale rather than a discount.
The launch lands while Cursor is in the middle of being acquired. SpaceX agreed in April to buy the company for $60 billion in stock, with closing expected in the third quarter; Cursor continues to operate independently until then.
Why it matters
Coding agents have so far been priced for developers earning US salaries, which has kept the most capable tooling out of reach in the markets with the largest developer populations. Start is the first serious attempt by a leading agent vendor to solve that with purpose-built local pricing rather than regional discounts on the same SKU — and notably, it treats cloud agents and mobile control as entry-level features rather than premium ones. If it converts, rivals from GitHub to Alibaba's Qoder will face pressure to match, and the competitive centre of gravity in agentic coding shifts toward volume markets in Asia.
