ChatGPT for Teens Adds Default Age-Based Safeguards

OpenAI launched a dedicated experience that automatically places identified 13-to-17-year-olds behind stronger safety and learning controls.

A separate default experience

OpenAI has launched ChatGPT for Teens, a dedicated product experience for users aged 13 to 17. Accounts are placed into the teen experience when users provide an eligible age or OpenAI’s age-prediction system estimates that they are under 18, making the protections automatic rather than dependent on a family configuring them manually.

The learning layer combines Study Mode, quizzes and visual explanations with new “responsible homework” reminders. When ChatGPT detects that a user may be seeking a shortcut to completing an assignment, it can redirect the conversation toward guided questions and step-by-step problem solving. Teens and linked parents can also define Study Hours during which Study Mode becomes the default.

Stronger behavioral boundaries

The teen version applies additional restrictions around self-harm, eating disorders, violence, dangerous activities, sexual material and other developmentally sensitive content. OpenAI says its under-18 behavior rules also prohibit the assistant from encouraging emotional dependence, using romantic language toward a teen or presenting itself as conscious and emotionally attached.

Other measures include break reminders, warnings before sensitive images are uploaded and onboarding that explicitly identifies ChatGPT as an AI system. Linked parents can set quiet hours, manage selected features and receive narrowly scoped notifications in certain high-risk situations. OpenAI is adding alerts related to eating disorders while saying it will limit the information disclosed to parents.

The company also began publishing teen-specific evaluations in its model system cards, covering difficult cases involving self-harm, violence, age-restricted goods and sexual content. It did not claim that these controls can eliminate harmful outputs or accurately identify every minor.

Why it matters

ChatGPT for Teens converts age assurance from a policy question into a product-routing mechanism: the model experience now changes automatically according to an inferred or declared age. Given ChatGPT’s scale, that design could influence expectations for other consumer AI services. It also creates a consequential trade-off among child protection, privacy and classification errors, especially when an automated system must decide whether an account belongs to a minor.
