Anthropic Secures $45B in Nscale Compute Capacity
The six-year agreement ties Anthropic’s next growth phase to 460 megawatts of Nvidia Vera Rubin infrastructure in West Virginia.
A six-year infrastructure commitment
Anthropic has agreed to spend about $45 billion over six years on computing capacity from British infrastructure provider Nscale, according to reports citing people familiar with the transaction. The agreement covers roughly 460 megawatts at Nscale’s planned Monarch campus in West Virginia, with service expected to begin in late 2027.
Nscale is expected to supply systems built around Nvidia’s Vera Rubin platform. The arrangement would give Anthropic a large, dedicated block of next-generation infrastructure for training models and serving products such as Claude and Claude Code. Neither company had issued a detailed public contract announcement when the reports appeared, leaving questions about payment guarantees, construction milestones and cancellation terms.
Capacity bought years before delivery
The commitment illustrates how frontier laboratories are reserving electricity, land and accelerators well ahead of demand. Unlike ordinary cloud purchases, a 460-megawatt deployment requires coordinated construction of data halls, grid connections, cooling and supporting generation. Nscale’s West Virginia project is therefore exposed to permitting, equipment-delivery and power-supply risks before Anthropic can use the contracted capacity.
Anthropic has pursued several large infrastructure agreements as it expands beyond capacity supplied by established partners including Amazon and Google. For Nscale, the contract could anchor its flagship American campus and strengthen its position ahead of a potential public listing. It also concentrates substantial execution risk in a provider founded only in 2024.
Why it matters
The size and duration of the agreement show that competition among frontier labs is increasingly being determined through infrastructure commitments made years in advance. Anthropic is effectively wagering that demand for Claude—and the computational requirements of future models—will justify paying for nearly half a gigawatt of capacity. If the campus arrives on schedule, the deal could reduce Anthropic’s dependence on the largest hyperscale clouds. If utilization, financing or construction disappoints, the same contract could become an unusually expensive constraint.
