Amazon freezes Nova line, bets on new Frontier model team
Business Insider reports Amazon has halted development on Nova Premier, Omni, Reel and Canvas, shifting resources to a research group under Pieter Abbeel.
Amazon has stopped active development on its Nova family of in-house models and moved resources to a new frontier research organisation, according to a Business Insider report on 28 July.
What the report describes
The Nova models are said to be entering a maintenance posture — kept running for existing customers, but no longer advanced. That covers the flagship Nova Premier and the Omni multimodal model, along with the Reel video generator and the Canvas image generator, meaning Amazon is stepping back from first-party generative media as well as from text.
In their place, Amazon is backing the Frontier Model Research group led by Pieter Abbeel, the Berkeley roboticist who joined Amazon through its acquisition of Covariant. The report points to a new foundation model from that group expected around re:Invent this autumn. Amazon's external position is unchanged: it remains among the largest investors in Anthropic and has committed capital to OpenAI, with combined exposure reported in the tens of billions.
Why it matters
Nova was Amazon's answer to the strategic problem every hyperscaler faces — whether renting someone else's frontier model to your cloud customers is a durable position. Launched with heavy promotion at re:Invent 2024, it never displaced Anthropic's models as the default choice on Bedrock. Quietly freezing it is an admission that a competent mid-tier model line is not worth the training spend when the same cloud sells better ones.
The strategic reading is a reset rather than a retreat. Handing the mandate to Abbeel, whose background is robotics and embodied learning rather than chat assistants, suggests Amazon is targeting a different axis than the one Nova lost on. But it also leaves Bedrock's differentiation resting entirely on third-party models for at least another quarter, and it removes one of the few non-Chinese, non-frontier-lab sources of competitive pressure on image and video generation pricing. For customers who standardised on Nova Reel or Canvas, a maintenance-mode model with no roadmap is a migration decision, not a footnote.
